Plan ahead.
It’s never “too much” when creating a mood board for your session. This allows us to be on the same page with the vibes want to have for your session as well as any outfit ideas you have. I have my clients create a Pinterest board and we work together on the planning to make their vision come to life!
Choose the right location.
When it comes to outdoor maternity photoshoots, location is key. Looking for a spot that has beautiful scenery such as Iron Mountain Trail. Location is one of the things that could make a session go from good to great! I help all my clients plan out locations, so if you don’t have a place in mind we can work together!
Another aspect of the outdoors to consider is the time of day, I always like to shoot at sunset aka golden hour. This can create those dreamy golden rays that warm up your photos! A huge factor in choosing locations for your maternity session is accessible. I want to make sure the location is easily accessible and safe for you to move around in, especially if you’re in your third trimester.
Dress for the occasion.
When planning your outdoor maternity photoshoot, it’s important to choose the right outfits. Opt for clothing that is comfortable and fits well, but also showcases your baby bump. Flowy dresses, maxi skirts, and fitted tops are all great options. Consider the colors and patterns of your outfit as well – solid colors and simple patterns tend to photograph well. Don’t forget to accessorize with jewelry or a hat to add some extra flair to your photos.
Bring props and accessories.
Sometimes you can feel like your whole maternity session is just you touching and holding your belly. To mix things up props can be such a nice change of pace. For this session, Sam opted for baby’s breath flowers as her accessory to hold while still showing off her bump!
Other ideas for props could be items that represent you and your partner’s interests or hobbies, such as sports equipment, musical instruments, or books. You can also incorporate baby items like booties, blankets, or ultrasound photos. Just make sure not to go overboard and distract from the main focus – your beautiful baby bump!
During this session.
Near the end of the session when we hit blue hour are my favorite photos, most of the images have no preset on them. The goal was to keep the tones as true to what was happening as possible! This is proof of how beautiful what is in front of us is naturally beautiful.
